Our clients had acquired a duplex apartment within a Grade II-listed terrace on a prestigious square in Westminster, but successive alterations had left very little original interior character.

Rather than recreate a historic interior, our approach was to introduce a more sympathetic architectural language through timber flooring, mouldings, joinery and carefully considered detailing. A remodelled open stair reinstates a stronger connection between the two levels and brings more natural light into the entrance hall, while subtle changes to partitions, storage and room proportions make the apartment work more naturally as a home. The result is a warmer, more coherent interior that feels appropriate to its listed setting without resorting to pastiche.
